Some newer vehicles monitor oil automatically and display the level in the instrument cluster or center screen. Check your owner’s manual to see if your vehicle has this feature.
If your car uses a dipstick, park on level ground, turn the engine off, and open the hood. Locate the dipstick, pull it out, wipe it clean, reinsert it fully, then remove it again to read the level. The oil should fall between the lower and upper marks.
If the level is at or below the lower mark, add a quart of the recommended oil, wait a few minutes, and recheck. The oil only needs to sit between the marked indicators for safe operation.*
The most reliable way to find the correct oil is to check your owner’s manual. Look in the index under “engine oil” to find the recommended type and viscosity.
You can also open the hood and check the oil cap. Many manufacturers print the required oil grade directly on the cap for quick reference.2
